Binary code is the most basic code used in computing, but programmers have developed lots of other codes or languages to create websites and applications. One of them is HTML, which stands for hyperlink markup language. It is a language for tagging, or marking, text that appears on websites. Learn how to read basic HTML tags—and how to debug them!

LET’S PLAY

HTML uses tags, or a series of symbols, to describe how to display certain elements so that a website is formatted properly. When checking whether there is a mistake in a line of code, programmers will look for things like missing or incorrect tags.

Some punctuation, such as opening and closing brackets, has its own HTML tags. For example, the box on the following page shows the tags for left and right brackets and curly braces.
